Healthcare reform has long held the promise of giving the HIV community a better way to get the care that it needs. While change can be intimidating, especially when the community relies on current systems to access lifesaving treatment and life-changing care, it’s also a step toward providing better health outcomes for everyone. A few changes that healthcare reform makes:
• People with preexisting conditions can’t be denied coverage
• No lifetime or annual caps exist on coverage
• People will have more options available to them
• Options are laid out in an easy to understand way.
While healthcare reform is a big step toward ending the epidemic in the long run, it’s still important to remember that people living with HIV have specific needs that need to be kept in mind while changes take place. That’s why the Ohio AIDS Coalition has developed a toolkit to make the transition easier. Every person living with HIV has specific needs that are important to reference when navigating the new healthcare system. In this toolkit, you’ll find some useful items that should walk you through.
